The Souls games are more sombre rather than outright depressing, I feel. They are all about declining and decaying worlds so the main tone reflects that but each individual character stories are not all just pure misery, death, and failure. Even characters that die find do so in service of moving on, finding release, finding reunion, etc. Death in those worlds isn't just turning into dirt.
