The issue is most Spanish speaking people aren't upset about the social aspect. They're upset about the way grammatical gender is being treated. As pointed out Latine is a more accepted alternative because at least you can pronounce it in Spanish, but you still run into people who try to throw the entire concept of grammatical gender under the bus and this just pisses people off and makes them angry and then their opponents assume it's out of some kind of hatred for LGBT people, when it's really rooted in the language itself. They're talking past each other on this issue.
