Some things do need to be changed to something notably different, like idioms that don't translate well. By and large, though, I'm in favour of keeping the core semantic content and not changing things like a character's gender because the translators are worried that it might offend people.

It is kind of funny seeing all of these people that are normally vehemently anti-censorship speaking out in favour of how the original version was censored, though. It's almost like they were never actually clinging to a principle they believe in and are instead latching onto whatever principle sounds like it best supports what they want.
