https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5I3DcapElQ Genre: JRPG (hopefully?) Release Date: 11/7/24 Platform: Switch Mario RPG fans are having a moment here! I'm actually playing through Thousand Year Door right now - my first time - and had to choose between getting that or the SMRPG remake. And then this thing dropped. What the heck? I wouldn't think Mario RPGs would be easy games to turn around at the end of a console lifecycle but here we are. This thing looks awesome. It's got everything you want if you're coming from that 2003 gem. I haven't played it in 20 years, but Mario & Luigi had this fun interplay between the two characters and their abilities, and lots of small little puzzle solving that felt smart. They're almost metroidvania-ish in nature. The trailer shows off a lot of that, but with a glorious art style and some great ability design. My question is, is this an actual RPG? Like, an honest to god one, and not a Sticker Star/Paper Jam/Origami King type of game where all the character management is abstracted out from the player? I'm not going to pretend that the Mario RPGs had some deep level of customization, but at least there were things to play with that made fighting the enemies feel notable. I would think that them remaking the classics would teach this lesson, but I'm not convinced. I want to know more. Also, who is developing this? Alphadream is dead. I'm looking forward to their next reveal, or when they show a chunk of gameplay. That'll clue me in on how hyped to be about this. --- xyzzy ... Copied to Clipboard! |
