My theory is that anti-trumps like Romney are going to be used to lead damage control as they try to reform their image into something more "normal". They've successfully made Trump the face of the party, so it'll probably be easy to use him as the sacrificial hog. Discard him and pretend that with him goes all the embarrassing shit people have associated with the GOP for the past decade.

That has a significant risk of splintering the GOP between those willing to tow the "traditional" conservative line and those who want Trumpism or nothing

Not that that's a bad thing
