I think HPs rise to fame was due to its magical setting and not necessarily the writing.

It was at the right place at the right time. It also helped that the books grew up with the readers. I never got into it, but my wife is obsessed with it. From watching the movies, Harry Potter is such a self-insert power fantasy character where everyone loves him and those that don't like him are written to be as unlikable as possible. Though I will admit, what they did with Professor Snape was pretty well done imo.
