Anagram 10/21/24 4:08:38 PM #276: | Whimsyshire: I guess this game did come out at the height of MLP mania. I'll tell you this, I have never seen a single episode of MLP, and I never will, so if there are any specific references, I don't know them. The idea of this whimsical, fun, and bright level full of cutesy enemies like unicorns and teddy bears is good. The fact that it's a specific response to people complaining that the game isn't dark enough is also funny. As a spiritual successor to the secret cow level, I approve. Does D4 have a secret level, let me just check... Oh, it's also a cow level. Bro, that was D2's joke level, make your own. D3 gets some points for not entirely riding D2's coattails! Alterac Valley Griefing Hearthstone (Game) Spawning as McCree in Lucioball: I've never seen this happen, but it sounds hilarious. I hope all of the Lucios were annoyed at being killed. Creep (Zerg) - Systems Functional Alamo Un'Goro Crater World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Blizzcon Big Game Hunters Night Elves (WC3 Faction): They're strong aesthetically, Night Elves are easily my favorite version of Wood Elves in any fantasy media. Giving them purple skin and woodsy hair colors was a good decision. I like how their most important buildings are all sapient trees, that's a fun touch to make them more magical and nature-y than the humans. I like how the trees can defend themselves against melee attackers, that's a cute touch. I like how they're kind of useless in melee combat, the only units they have that can competently fight up close are the mountain giant and the druid of the claw. I like how they're mostly women, with men in spellcaster roles, a fine enough reverse of how the humans do it, and I wish WoW had kept that dynamic, but I understand why they had to make the genders balanced, so it's fine. As an army, they clearly map mostly clearly onto the Protoss, being the "wiser than humans" faction that specializes in active-use abilities instead of raw stats. But the result of this is that they just require more skill than I have, so I just sort of never used them outside of the campaign. I've seen a lot of people argue that it doesn't make sense for them to join the Alliance in WoW, and that they should've been a third faction or neutral, but I disagree. The Alliance is stationed in the Eastern Kingdoms, so it has no overlapping land claims, and it has a problem with Orcs, the people invading and taking over Night Elf territory. It seems entirely reasonable that the Night Elves would see the humans as natural allies. Anyway, yeah: strong visuals and atmosphere, but I just don't like their gameplay at all. Overwatch and TF2 Comparisons Jade Golems Wings of Liberty Tristram: What a cozy little town oh nooooooooooo. It's appropriate that in this bleak world, everything you tried to accomplish in the first game was for naught, even down to saving the town. The only survivors are Deckard Cain and Adia, and you'll wish she died too. Showing us its destroyed corpse in the second game is a good move, it helps show how the demons can't really be stopped, and combined with the heroes of the first game being corrupted, shows us that everything is against us. The fact that this is one of the few non-randomized zones is also good, I guess you couldn't really randomize it since it's based on the original game's map. I love how the friendly blacksmith is now undead and attacks you. But I can't for the life of me think of why anyone in D3 would name their town "New Tristram," that's just asking for trouble. Anyway, you visit its ruins AGAIN in D3, and it's like... we already did this. You don't need to visit Tristram every single game. Oh wait, you don't technically visit it in D4, but the Wiki says you visit a recreation of the town in a vision, okay. Well, I guess this town is just the Green Hills Zone of Diablo, so be it. Vicarious Visions Dr. Boom (Card) Looking for Baal? Artanis Rogue (Diablo) - Fifty DKP Minus Sombra Infestor Diablo III Terran Building Flight Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal Warcraft II Ana Lost Vikings II: Norse by Norsewest Prison Break (World of Warcraft) Jeff Kaplan Videos Stratholme Queen (StarCraft 1): Almost completely useless. This unit doesn't fit the style of Zerg gameplay at all. As a late game unit, for 100 minerals and vespene gas, you get a very fragile flying unit with the ability to infest a command center (useless), parasite an enemy (useless), ensnare a group of enemies (useless by the time you get it), and instantly kill a non-robot/archon ground unit (almost useless). It is well designed from a visual perspective, it's ugly and yet still very slightly feminine in its eyes, but it's hard to think of anything less valuable to the battlefield. Even more strangely, for something called a "queen," it has nothing to do with like controlling the Swarm, and it's not any more important than any other random unit. That concept already went to the Overlords! Completely bizarre unit in every way, I don't know if I ever saw this outside of campaign missions. Okay, according to the Wiki, the Hatchery was supposed to be a queen Aliens-style that lays eggs in front of you, but they couldn't get it to look right, that actually makes complete sense. Sarah Kerrigan Radio Free Zerg Mike Morhaime Lost Vikings Maiev Shadowsong Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Un'Goro: The Journey Warcraft I Gear Score: Ugh, kill me. Obviously, WoW was already a numbers game, but this removes all pretense and reduces every PUG question to "what's your gear score?" And I can't even blame them for asking that! It's now a valid question, especially for me, the tank! No one's gear matters more than the tank's!
