- Stay a While and Listen

Wasteland Patrol: I love these little cinematics, even if half of them are completely pointless. Like, we the players already know what the Zerg are. The fact that these nameless rednecks get killed as soon as they meet them is meaningless to the overall plot. But it gives so much personality to the Terrans as a faction. They really are just a bunch of dumb rednecks listening to dumb redneck music in their dumb redneck trucks and not at all suited for the epic space opera they're about to get dragged into. And god, the ugly 1998 graphics of this thing, perfect. You compare this to FF8's beautiful cinematics and it's like night and day.

Ghost (Unit): As a kid, I distinctly remember reading the manual for the game before playing it, and it had all of this lore about how each unit works, and it was especially long for the Ghost. I was afraid of this being important and me needing to remember it to play the game... only for all of it to be meaningless. Anyway, the idea of these super psychic agents who are completely brainwashed into serving the government as assassins and spies is compelling. I especially like how basically everything they have is merely more advanced than 1998 technology, like the ability to call in nukes, the ability to disable robotics and computers, and... well, the ability to turn invisible, I guess. It seems advanced while still being very practical and less advanced than what even the basic Protoss units bring to bear. And yeah, it has easily the best unit portrait of any Terran unit. All covered in shadows, hiding in the darkness, three glowing green lenses of different sizes on some kind of goggles, the fact that it's specifically three implies all of kinds of things about how it's giving him more information than a human could otherwise have, it's great. Weird puffs of some kind of chemical exhaling out of his mask, all great. And I think it's important that it's called the "Ghost," because that's by far the most Protoss-like name of any Terran unit (that and the Wraith). Everything else is either a normal military name, or sounds like the nickname for a military vehicle (Vulture, etc). The Ghost and Wraith are the ONLY units with special fantastical names. Everything about this unit is super cool... but atmosphere is all it has. Like basically all late-game units, the Ghost is utter trash. I remember seeing a clip from like 2000 where a guy in one second individually lockdowned like ten enemy flying ships at the same time, and everyone was like "this is the greatest example of micro ever," and that's the only time I've ever heard of a Ghost doing anything in StarCraft. And it's a shame, because they truly are the coolest Terran unit. By the way, the SC2 Ghost portrait is garbage.

Vespene Gas: God fucking dammit I want to require some vespene gas, I want to require it so fucking much. I love how StarCraft replaces wood with crystals and gold with gas, but flips their importance (as in, gold is the 'main' resource, and wood is the 'secondary' resource in Warcraft, but crystals are the main one in StarCraft). I love how it's a made-up chemical that apparently all three races equally rely on. It's just a perfect made-up resource, like dilithium in Star Trek. And don't tell me that dilithium is a real thing, I know that, I don't care, it's nothing like it is in Star Trek. Even the name "Vespene" sounds good, it sounds like it could be a real thing. Wait, the Wiki says it's a hydrocarbon compound? That's oddly specific.

Invading Enemy Capital Cities: This was always fun. I remember after achievements were added, there were calls every so often for PUGs to just go around and kill all of the Horde leaders. And every time, people would get lost because they didn't know their way around Horde cities. Like, it was fun! It was fun to storm into Orgrimmar, ride past all of the Horde players milling around, watch them realize what we're here for, and to get followed by 15~ of them as we killed Thrall. And the reverse was also fun, when I watched them kill Varian Wrynn. It's a fun little way of combining PvP and PvE into one thing, where it's obviously all PvE, but the fact that you're riding past Horde players while doing it gives it a veneer of being something more.

StarCraft: Ghost: The most important game Blizzard never made. You read the storyline of this game, and it's all clearly things that they just recycled in SC2. Kerrigan amassing her Zerg on Char, General Warfield, ghosts turning into Specters, Artanis trying to unite groups of Protoss... Like, the idea of Nova learning the truth about who she works for (Mengsk) and having to choose between loyalties is cool, but the reality is simple: Nova as she is is really boring. She's just a spy. She never feels any disloyalty to Mengsk, the man who killed her bosses five years ago and installed himself as emperor. Remember Firefly? Remember how there's a spy there who's never disloyal, then he learns what his bosses did to some random planet on the edge of space, and he's like "hm actually now I am disloyal" and he helps the heroes? That should have been Nova, if you insisted on this character being in SC2. I don't know, I never played the special Nova DLC campaign in SC2, maybe she's amazing there. But it's bizarre how Blizzard completely fell in love with this character and really thought they had something with her, to the point of commissioning a statue of her for their headquarters and writing seven novels about her, but she was never in an actual game until SC2. They didn't care enough to finish her game! And from what you can see online from the 2020 leak, the game looks perfectly good! It looks like a fun 2002-era action-adventure-shooter-stealth game. I don't understand why they didn't finish it. "In February 2009 China banned StarCraft: Ghost's name as an e-sports brand due to issues involving 'superstition.'" God, thank you, StarCraft wiki, for letting me laugh more at China.
