Blightzkrieg posted... Idk I'd kind of disagree with season 1. They made Elrond, Galadriel and Sauron into main cast characters. It was just their personalities and motivations were nonsensical and didn't match up with existing lore.
They pretty much just dropped a bunch of canon names and then wrote fanfiction about them with little regard for existing lore. S2 has done a lot more to wrangle it into something that vaguely resembles canon, though still with some pretty glaring inconsistencies (especially around timelines).
Blightzkrieg posted... I'd been interested in Sauron at first, as I thought they were building to a narrative where he was trying to be good and atone, but would be rejected and fall deeper into evil. But they just doubled down on everything somehow being part of his master plan, which made no sense at all.
They kind of keep doing both. They try to portray him as having some deep-seeded issues because of how Morgoth treated him, and that he genuinely believes he's doing what's best for Middle Earth, but they also keep going with the "everything you do has fallen into my grand design muahahaha," along with establishing some very abusive relationships with everyone around him (he's very fond of "look what you made me do to you"). He's simultaneously a victim of circumstance and an evil genius, which does get a bit tiring. The stuff between him and Celebrimbor, however, was actually pretty great. Some great writing and acting in there, to give credit where credit is due.
