To be fair, audiophiles are the sorts of people that will pay thousands for a slightly better setup that most people cannot distinguish. I wouldn't go to us for value for money.

A sound bar is ultimately a compromise. The drivers are generally small, stereo separation isn't particularly great until you're spending decent money, it can't be upgraded or modified as time goes on and I've never heard one do particularly good surround sound when compared to proper setups in similar price ranges. However, they're physically smaller, they're less hassle due to way less cables which also makes the setup simpler and they're still a vast improvement on built in speakers. Also way easier to try out, you can go to any electronics store and listen to them in person and see what you like.
