"Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by the Fifth Dimension

While their arrangement was possibly the first major label recording of the song (it was certainly the most successful), it's actually a medley of 2 songs ("Aquarius" and "The Flesh Failures" (Let the Sun Shine In)) from the musical Hair, which debuted Off-Broadway in 1967, two years before the Fifth Dimension's version.

"Because the Night" by 10,000 Maniacs

A cover of the Patti Smith song from 1977 (co-written by her and Bruce Springsteen). I've always enjoyed both versions. Patti Smith and Natalie Merchant have two VERY different voices, but they're both very 'powerful' in distinctive ways. I like the arrangement of 10K Maniacs' version better, but the lyrical bits are equally poignant imo.
