Mostly I think it's just economics and circumstance. You go to a car dealership, most cars are manual. You have more choice that way. Maybe they're cheaper to build and service.

All plug in hybrids and EVs are automatic, so manuals might end up just being a thing for specialist sports and 'track day' cars.

I've driven a manual all my life, but switched to automatic when I bought my PHEV. Won't deny it's a lot easier to drive, but still kind of miss the physical experience of manual. (And my left hand does still go to the gear shift at junctions).
