Keeping that in mind, we might not have gotten Obamacare without a party switch. The Democrats wouldn't have gotten to a filibuster proof supermajority in the Senate in late 2009 if Arlen Specter hadn't gotten fed up with Republicans and switched to the Democrats in the spring. That got the Democratic caucus to 59 (57 D + 2 I), with Republicans challenging Al Franken's win in Minnesota, plus Ted Kennedy was absent because of his brain cancer. After Franken was finally declared the winner and Kennedy died and a temp Senator was named, the Democrats had 60 and began working on the first ACA bill. ... Copied to Clipboard! |
