Nothing really. People just kinda look for reasons to be mad. Most cases, it's clearly harmless.

Except there are times where it doesn't make sense to use, because you could be referring to something that specifically refers to females and that's faster than saying "women and girls" and sounds more natural from speaking.

It genuinely feels like the type of people that's get upset about it are perpetually online.

For those times when it 'doesn't make sense' not to use it, you can go ahead and use it. No one is trying to erase the word from the vocabulary.

You're trying to create confusion by saying that, just because it is fine in some contexts, people should accept it in all.

Language is more subtle than that. You don't have to be 'perpetually online' to realize this.
