The wiki has Whedon as one of the writers and a good number of the others credited at least wrote some episodes. And actually the guy that wrote Runaways and Y: The Last Man also did a few issues.

From what I read, I don't know that the comics are actually bad, they're just...weird. At least in context of the show. The change in media allowed them to be a lot wilder in terms of plotlines and character design than they could do on a network TV budget and with 90s effects. Like this is not something you'd see on BtVS:

I think this worked to their detriment because it's just so not BtVS. It didn't feel like I was reading a Buffy comic, it felt like I was reading DC a comic with SMG's face on the main character.

Also, Angel and Buffy get superpowers (even by their standards) and have superspeed, mid-flight sex so hard that they crash through a mountain and birth a new dimension. I think that's where I kinda checked out.

And Xander and Dawn get together. I hate that.
Yeah, the post-show comics definitely fell into the problem of doing things just because they could and as a result completely losing the tone the show had.
