I think a lot of people struggle with the fact that a large subsection of the populace are legit attracted to Trump because they are genuinely bad human beings who like hurting others rather than anything of substance.

-they like throwing immigrants out the country because they are racial and or nationalistic supremacists.
-they like gutting the federal workforce because many are genuinely jealous that most of them have better jobs than they could ever hope for.
-they respect Putin invading Ukraine and his bonker society because they want the same form of naked imperialism and regressive Conservative values gripping every aspect of our American society.
-they like cutting health benefits because they view the unhealthy and elderly as parasites despite being often old and unhealthy themselves (good ol internalized hate)

Americans viewed our country men and women as often better people than they actually were and therefore dismissed the fascist overtones that colored much of the American underbelly, people can and often change but it is going to require some serious self reflection that frankly I'm not sure a lot of our society is willing to do.

That's a lot of words just to say, they're very stupid. And FYI, the majority of Americans aren't evil. They don't even participate in politics. The ones you mentioned are very easy to identify by how they consistently vote Republican. Everyone else is just very uninformed. You can blame that on the ruling elites; the Republicans who played the long game by deteriorating American intelligence, and the Democrats who just stood there and let it happen.
