The problem with the ST was that it tried to cling way too tightly to the OT characters and plot points. We could have had a brand new story with a new cast in a new part of space, but no, they brought the original trilogy characters back to steal spotlight, made sure half the new cast was related to the old cast instead of having their own identities, and repeated story beats from the OT verbatim. Instead of something brand new and exciting, we just got another chosen one from a desert planet, another droid being hunted, another Death Star, another war between the Empire vs. Rebellion (but with new names this time), another jaded mentor living as a hermit, another Jedi vs. Sith showdown.

It was afraid to be new and different, and suffered for that. Say what you will about the PT but at least it tried to tell its own story.
