i thought it was proven he cheated to obtain some of those records, but i never knew about claims about contributions to suicide

It seems like the tactic was to prove that Billy didn't have much of a reputation for Karl's claims to affect Billy's reputation since one part of defamation is the loss of reputation caused by the statement.

It's pretty silly and it's hard to side with Karl on this since he spent so much time dedicated to showing how he's proving Billy is a cheater and people naturally assumed the case was about Karl saying Billy cheated.
