It seems like the tactic was to prove that Billy didn't have much of a reputation for Karl's claims to affect Billy's reputation since one part of defamation is the loss of reputation caused by the statement.

It's pretty silly and it's hard to side with Karl on this since he spent so much time dedicated to showing how he's proving Billy is a cheater and people naturally assumed the case was about Karl saying Billy cheated.

The case was about the videos Karl made--part of which was cheating but since Billy has good lawyers and actually listens to them they used a different vector that is easier for judges to understand.

Karl misrepresented that saying the whole thing was about cheating in his own videos while ignoring his lawyer pleading with him to stop saying he's trying to ruin Billy's reputation on YouTube.
