The *premise* of Homestuck was awesome. 4 e-friends hop on the newest game and things get really wacky. Very nostalgic for me as someone who grew up on web 1.0, AOL messenger, etc.

The execution, however...ugh. The above ends up being maybe 5% of the experience and the rest is filled out by lolsorandumb nonsense, self-insert OCs, WAY too much esoteric terminology made up just for the story, time travel shenanigans. Also I don't think any other work of fiction in human history treats character deaths - even gruesome death - as something so inconsequential. Literally DBZ had higher stakes for characters dying than Homestuck does.

Honestly, the main reason it was popular is because dressing up like a certain alien race in the story basically became this furry/brony-adjacent thing for a while. I can't believe how many fans I met who admitted they only skimmed the comic and skipped all the chat logs where like 90% of the story happens. It was a large majority of them.

I dunno where I'm going with this. Let me try to wrap it up.

The core idea was cool.
It got bloated to hell very quickly.
The majority of the plot is incomprehensible meandering.
The ending sucked.
The fandom was uniquely cringe, participating in it was the major draw of the series, and everyone has moved on.
It's not worth reading.

imo
