Not helped by Luke literally NOT being the chosen one. Anakin was still the chosen one of the OT. Luke was basically there to offer Vader a second chance, by being basically "padme but a jedi." That's the problem. The first two trilogies DONT stand alone; we only group them because of when they were made, and perceived quality differences. They were one story.
