There is a clear rift in the base, at least there are some Republican critics questioning his "America First" policy and how this doesn't go along with that narrative. Not just those in power though, personally speaking, plenty of people I know that voted for Trump believed fully the claims about how if he were president the Ukrainian war wouldn't have began. Many of these simpletons truly do believe that Trump is such a great businessman that he could just talk his way through anything without the use of force; I've heard this response firsthand so you can't just say "no one ever believed" that. You're giving the people who would vote for him too much credit.
