The entire point of that is to make queer people feel safe in their workplace so it's not just a silent "what if". It's pretty encouraging to see your manager wearing a pride flag and it makes you feel like you don't have to keep secrets. The response to conservative thought is not to try not to bother them, it's to make them feel like they're the outcast weirdo for being the bullies that they are. That's tepid submissive behavior. The point is to own the air around you, and if they want to say something shitty they should feel uncomfortable.
I don't think I would have been able to explain it as intelligently as this.

People can have pride flags and do all that if they want to, but being a third-party who presses it on others could just brood resentment for pride all around. Or maybe actually ask a lgbt person for what you think is appropriate and wanted instead of trying to do it yourself when you don't even understand it. It isn't that hard but social justice warriors gonna social justice warrior, I guess.
I've been in situations where I didn't feel safe in a safe space due to virtue signaling. Heck, I've once been treated like shit for making jokes about disabilities. I'm disabled. The virtue signalers who harassed me weren't even disabled. Some people harm the very people they claim to protect. Thankfully, it's not very common. What's actually common is ableism in general. The worst offenders are healthcare professionals and employers.

I wouldn't have done it either simply because I wouldn't be able to afford any unnecessary purchases like that.
Afford? I would have used the word waste. I also wouldn't waste my money on stuff I don't need. If I don't already have the piece of clothing I'm asked to wear, they should provide it. The only non-monochrome colors I have in my wardrobe that I could wear in an office are shades of blue, red, and green. I have other colors, but they would be inappropriate due to style or wear and tear.
