Question about the Kamek Orb. If I'm grinding for a specific character to unlock, can it still transform me into that character if they're already in the race, or do I need to reset and get a lineup without that character?

For example, if I want to unlock Fish Bone, do I need to make sure Fish Bone isn't already in the race as a CPU for the transformation to be available? Or will it still have a chance to turn me into that character as long as I'm on the right course?

I did look up a list of courses that I need to focus on for each character, and I do know about the 2-player trick, but I don't want to actually use that trick. I just need to know if I'm wasting my time trying to unlock somebody I'm already racing against.
