Also this. By the time Biden dropped out, doing what they actually did was the least bad option (though still very bad, as it turned out). The correct approach was for Biden to make it explicitly clear, way back in 2021, that he wasn't going to run in 2024.

There was a quite obvious way to avoid that.

No, actually, there wasn't. Even if Harris had come out stronger against israel, they would've been screaming "so why aren't you doing more?"
