You're wrong about this. Coming out against it won't achieve anything, because they were never for it in the first place. You may reply that it's still hurting them because they're wrongly perceived as having embraced "defund the police" even though they never did (because of Republican propaganda). But if that's true, then coming out against it is not the answer - the answer is not to bring it up at all, and not to rise to it if someone else brings it up. If the Democrats are harmed by a perceived association with "defund the police" then by condemning it, by keeping it in the conversation at all, they're doing the first half of the Republicans' work for them.
