Forget video games, MTV for example merely existing kept that type of culture alive and strong. Xbox being a online shooter mountain dew box may be a meme but it was no different for the online games that existed on the PS2 (especially socom 2) and the PC (especially games like unreal tournament and quake 3 arena. Voice chat was non-existent for that era of PC online gaming, but that didn't do a thing to stop the usual insults from simply being typed out to you.
