I've read up a bit on this case before - it's been in the news since I'm from Massachusetts - and it's not as straight forward as this article seems to present it. Two major issues:

1) When the girl's underwear was tested for DNA, the match that came back was for her father. When asked about it on the witness stand, the father's theory was that it is cross-contamination from the laundry bin.

2) Important evidence had been withheld from the defense team (for over a year) until the late stages of the trial, when it came out that the cell phone records seemingly show that the alleged rapist wasn't on the bridge at the time he would have needed to be in order to have tossed the girl.

There's a reasonable chance this going to get tossed out.
