Hell, it lasted about a decade before they even made first contact with the Covenant, the Spartans were originally UNSC/ONI black ops to fight insurrection, then the war gave them a glow-up. It mentioning both Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson makes me think they will take place during the battle at Reach. They first meet just before the Pillar of Autumn escapes the battle.
