They first meet just before the Pillar of Autumn escapes the battle. I'm not sure how they make it fit in Canon, but Halo: Reach and The Fall of Reach book already conflicted with each other, so I guess it doesn't matter much. This makes the most sense to me. Reach was the pillar of autumn being the final escape that all the other Spartans fought to save. To get some space before the covenant did their worst.
