The third character would lose all his items but keep the armor he is wearing. It has to be legendary or lower. No exotic. Plus you keep the shader you have on. That way you can start over like everyone else but have the look of the Destiny 1 player and be a vet that survived the tower attack. They did say in the trailer that some guardians survived.
