In otherwords, Nintendo didn't make nearly enough money off each NES classic sold to keep making them. Nintendo stumbled into success with the NES classic, I agree it was meant as a stop gap item for the holidays because the Switch wasn't ready.

They've now seen what a phenomenon it became and realized they priced it too low. Even at an MSRP of $99 the thing still would have sold great (if not completely cleared out by scalpers) and even if the sales were lower, Nintendo would be laughing all the way to the bank with higher margins.

They're killing the NES, gonna make an SNES classic at a higher price point and make a killing.
