Wasn't the civil war the highest american death toll of any war to date?
I can see why someone would think why couldn't there have been another way.

Subtle things could have prevented many wars, but most of it is an in hindsight kind of thing.

They could have prevented world war 2 at the treaty of versailles
They could have prevent world war 1 with a effective bodyguard
they probably could have prevented the civil war too in some way.

originally the constitution proposed an abolition of slavery, if it was pushed harder before the south's economy became too dependent on it, it may have prevented a war, who knows.
