Both were the same for me, same number of characters in each syllabary, right? I've been lightly studying kanji connotations/meaning for a couple years now. Once I hit around 500 I've begun forgetting old ones while learning new ones which is the biggest pain. --- move all remaining groundhog mercenaries to the front lines.
