We don't really know why he left her but if it was due to her injuries I somewhat understand as her appearance would have changed. Both physical and mental attraction are important in a relationship and although marriage is supposed to be 'in sickness and in health, until death us do part' and all that jazz nothing is a guarantee save for death.
