People support the dehumanization and cruel treatment of criminals all the time, unfortunately, even though it's been proven to increase the recidivism rate. The logic is that 'if prison is too comfortable, they'll just want to go back', but it just seems like the opposite is happening. Funnily enough, those countries where criminals seem to get lavish accomodations actually have a really low recidivism rate. As in, criminals don't go back to jail. It's almost like reformation requires not being a fucking jackass to the people being reformed. Wow, what a novel concept right. But the problem is that people don't want reformation, they want to punish people. They want the state to participate in their vengeance, even if the person being punished didn't even personally wrong them. Lawful Arrogance is truly a horrendously evil thing. I know that personally, when I feel mistreated, I take it out on people around me in a harsh way. If I ever went to jail and actually decided to do the time instead of killing myself beforehand (I am convinced I'd kill myself instead of serving time), I know for a fact that I would make it a point to be the worst person I could possibly be afterward. I'd go in as a person who made a mistake. I'd come out as the most unprecedented monster I could possibly be and it would be my mission to lay waste to as many lives as possible... Not necessarily innocent lives. I dunno. Thankfully that won't happen though.
