Lightning Returns is what happens when you have an incompetent director (that's unnaturally obsessed with a boring character) make a trilogy revolving around said character because the higher ups at the company know fuck all what to do to stall for time until FFXV drops (like a nuclear bomb, because that game sucked too). With LR, he fully indulged in his shame and made a game that's about (above all else) dressing Lightning up in different outfits and accessories. Story and gameplay has taken a backseat to watching Lightning prance about in a bikini whilst wearing a top hat.

Take the gameplay from X-2 (another "masterpiece" of fanservice drivel from the "talented" Toriyama), strip out the other two party members, and you've got Lightning Returns' combat in a nutshell. Take any RPG ever made and strip out the story, leaving only the most banal sidequests imaginable behind, and you've got its "story."

Combine those with a tiny world, filled with areas you'll be traversing countless times through tedious backtracking, being toured by an emotionless husk of a woman, whose earwaves are being polluted 24/7 by a child that feels compelled to remind you of every possible little thing imaginable, and you've got Lightning Returns.

It's a pathetic excuse of a game that only serves to insult any poor soul that hoped for some semblance of closure from this trilogy that should never have been. A complete waste of time that offers absolutely nothing that the previous entries didn't already offer. You're better off playing almost any other RPG ever made, because - more than anything - the game is boring on level that I previously thought unreachable.
