Certainly in the case of a film, which has a limited running time. You work with what you have, and if people are more interested they can investigate supporting works. Most EU works (at least the ones I've read) don't really stand up on their own if you're not familiar with the original films, because they assume preexisting knowledge of the characters and setting.
