Having stories about black people in which the main point of the story is that they're black is shitty storytelling in most cases. It works out well when the story is about real life (such as Moonlight) and not about capeshit punching robot cops.
You should treat characters as if they're people first and foremost, and their labels secondary. Simon Baz talks about having been imprisoned in Gitmo, and the harassment his family faces, but the comic is, first and foremost, still a story about him cooperating with Jessica to punch Aliens in the face in the name of the Green Lantern Corps and not a twitter hashtag.
