TopicIs Skyrim actually a good game?

Skyrim's the epitome of the 'one step forward, one step back' concept that Bethesda's become known for - for every improvement the game made over its predecessor (better and more diverse worldspace, better dungeons, better combat), it took something out or made something worse (worse guild quests, worse loot, less in-depth leveling). It somehow managed to make the most cliched monster in all of fantasy pretty cool again, and made great improvements in the field of making a living, breathing world that doesn't necessarily revolve around you the player. It's also the sloppiest game Beth's put out (making that precious 11-11-11 deadline was more important than a polished product), and first and only Beth game I played where the patches truly did just as much harm as good.

So it really is a mixed bag - the people who love it have plenty to trumpet, the people who hate it have plenty of ammo with which to rip it apart, and the people in the middle who enjoys its positives but aren't blind to its negatives have just enough reason to keep farting around in the worldspace for a thousand hours or so.

Don't waste time on the game without mods though, especially now that consoles have access to a decent chunk of them.
