The Original series had more fighting techniques and martial arts, and goofiness. While Z is more Beams and Yelling. That's how they arguments kinda go, just not as exaggerated as I typed. It's just Z, while is good on its own rights.. It'd be better to start from Dragon Ball so you can see Goku's whole journey rather than his Son, with him popping around every now and again.
