He's contemplating the passage of time, and mourning the fact the life he loves will eventually wither away, replaced by something else. He loves it too much as it is, and doesn't want it to change - but it must, because he must grow. So what if, he thinks, he refused to grow up? "Okay, so try to imagine your life as a novel." For reasons I can't really disclose, this line makes me laugh.
