The basic premise is they revolve around an mmo called The World and as a result of a number of things surrounding its creation, there's problems that can put people into comas in the real world. Literally, the premise was ripped off by SAO. But unlike SAO, the .hack franchise has good characters who have dialogue that isn't teeming with teen angst. And it also has fantastic music. Especially the GU games. You can check out .hack//sign to get an idea of what the series is like as far as the anime goes.
