It'd be more like going to somewhere that claims to compare prices and point you to the best deals, but favors products with companies they sponsor in return for a percentage of their profits.

Now, if they're up front with you about this and tell you when they're pushing a sponsored product, then fair enough I think. However, if they don't tell you this and actively mislead you? In that case, I think the EU would be right intervene.

With Google, it's kind of borderline. There's a tiny piece of text in the top right corner saying some products are sponsored. It's not clear to me exactly what products though. Maybe I'm missing something.

If you want to stick with the supermarket comparison, I guess it'd be like a supermarket showing you prices from their competition (presumably making it seem like they're cheaper than them), but then misleading you a bit to push their own products.
