All that bugs me is when they change a white character into a minority for no reason.

It's only ever done forone of two reasons: first is when they do it to get attention, like in the case of having a black James Bond just for the hell of it. This is clearly a case of exploiting an actor's race for attention, and for the life of me I can't understand why such a thing would be celebrated.

Second is when they "want more diversity", like how the current Avengers lineup is a checklist of every sort of person that isnt a straight white male. The problem with this is that they require a minorty character to ride the coattails of a straight white guy in order for anyone to give a shit about them. It's a tacit admission on the part of the creators that they can't get anyone to care about the new asian kid on his own merits. They need to make him the Hulk because they know the character isn't good enough to sell their own book. But in the minds of the public, Bruce Banner is still the Hulk, and he. always. will. be.

If creators want to spread diversity by creating new and exciting concepts that feature minorities, that's wonderful. But by doing either of the above examples they're just exploiting minorities, not embracing them.
