It's never really bothered me one way or another. Because I don't self insert or can only relate to a character that is the same gender, race and/or sexuality as me. But if we don't make a big deal out one or more of these aspects, then characters won't be created around these small aspects? If you don't define yourself by one of those three things, then why would you want characters defined by one of those things?

I don't know what the answer is because not all people look at fiction like I do. But much like partisan politics neither side wants budge, and so we just end up with a stalemate where diversity is stagnant.
