Their civilization's technology was comically far superior to our own but it has long since been lost. Imagine if you and your chums went on a boat to 700AD with only what you had in your pockets and whatever small things you could carry. How powrful is your technology? Is our military powerful enough to destroy them? Easily. They are refugees on a transport ship that is fast running out of power.
