Speaking of Gwen Stacy, that movie didn't have to downplay her looks. Emma Stone never looked as good as she didn't in that movie. But the character had brains and a sense of humor. You can look good and be an interesting character. Guys do it all the time. But they're not marginalized, so you don't have to teach people to respect average looking dudes or sexy guys who make themselves look average through intentionally bad clothing choices.

But, no, Mary Jane is the hot redhead who Spider-Man rescues, so she can't have any merit as a character until she is no longer physically attractive and no longer in harm's way.
