Multiple interviews included the journalist asking about the audio and the Square personnel responding by stating that it's a higher-quality output now. No one ever followed through with, "yeah, but are the voices still super-compressed?" So there was a conflicting narrative buzzing around the net the whole time. Compounding matters, while many who watched the English-language preview vids recognized the compression, others were impressed enough with the better-sounding overall package to insist we were just imagining it!
