Something about how the training dulls you to it, and how getting scared would cause you to freeze up under fire, while laughing at it allows you to keep your mind relatively clear. My great grandfather told a story about the time his best friend in the service took a round in the shoulder in WWII, and the first thing he did when he hit the ground was smile, laugh, and yell towards the Germans "OI!
